Published on August 22, 2019
I didn't know if it would happen or not, but here we go: Ian Bertram's LITTLE BIRD #5 drops tomorrow, Friday August 23rd, at 9AM PDT/12PM EDT! EVERY piece will be available, including the cover and ALL interior pages!
LITTLE BIRD #5 is the concluding chapter of this beloved smash-hit limited series. But it's not the end of the story. Yes, that's correct: Ian and writer Darcy Van Poelgeest are currently at work on the follow-up, PRECIOUS METAL! The Little Bird Saga continues in 2020!
So just how beloved is LITTLE BIRD? Beloved enough to become one of Image Comics' best-sellers of the year, consistently selling out and undergoing multiple printings; beloved enough to be named by critic after critic as one of the great comic works of recent years (more on that in a bit); and beloved enough that we've sold out of every single piece of art on the site. All 109 pieces.
A sampling of reviews for LITTLE BIRD #5:
Little Bird has been quite possibly the best series to come out of 2019. Each issue ramps up the stakes and intensity to a staggering degree, and the conclusion is no different. Darcy Van Poelgeest and Ian Bertram deliver an absolutely wild ending.
Little Bird, as razor-sharp as its script is, is nothing without Ian Bertram. This is a guy I’ve never even heard of who bursts onto the scene and literally blasts me in the face with artistic genius. Each page is a marvel with soul in every panel. While so much of it is technically on-point, there’s indescribable magic to the work. I can sit down and study each page to try my absolute best to understand why it works, but I’ll never truly unpack every layer. It’s too dense and too smart. If every publisher is not currently fighting tooth-and-nail to get this guy to do a book for them, then their priorities are flat-out wrong. The guy deserves superstar status right now.
The worst thing about Little Bird #5 is that I no longer get to gush about it every month. The writing and art are, as always, perfectly in sync. One simply does not work without the other, and that’s not due to lack of talent on any creator’s part, it’s due to the storytelling being so deeply intertwined between the team. This is peak comics, folks. Books like this are the reason we continue to try to give new creators a shot because there’s always that chance that you’ll find a Little Bird.
Darcy Van Poelgeest, Ian Bertram, Matt Hollingsworth, Aditya Bidikar and Ben Didier have formed a delightful mix of industry newbies and veterans to create nothing short of a five issue masterpiece.
This book has really just been a tour de force, and now in its finale issue, the creators do not let up. I’ve heaped praise upon Little Bird, and there’s a good reason why—this is a rare story that feels like it might only be possible within the comics medium. Special effects have gotten pretty impressive these days, but artist Ian Bertram (with Matt Hollingsworth colors) is just doing so much with the visuals in every last panel. Writer Darcy Van Poelgeest, meanwhile, has layered ideas about the nature of society that give the artists plenty of ammunition. This is, quite simply, one hell of a comic, and it’s been an absolute joy to consume.
I expect the Eisner Awards to be paying attention!
And remember, Ian worked big for this series, creating the art on oversized 12"X18" board. For some pages he worked REALLY big...18"X24"! That will become important later, consider it a clue for now!
Tomorrow. 9AM PDT. Your last chance to acquire a piece from the first volume of the ongoing Little Bird Saga. Best of luck to all, see you soon!
