Update from Felix / Fundraiser announcement
Published on June 12, 2021
Hey everyone,
This week marks the one year anniversary of my wife’s passing. Dianna made me promise to keep doing fun stuff with our daughter, just like we used to as a family. Not for sadness to be a permanent state. I’ve done my best to keep that promise, even if I’ve had to fake it at times.
So this past weekend I surprised her with a trip to Disneyland, for the opening of Avengers Campus. She’s now a huge Marvel fan! She's even gotten into the comics, and is quite impressed that I work with artists who have worked on titles she’s been reading (impressed with her dad, how novel!).
It was our first vacation in 4 years, and we had a blast. She was happy, so I was happy. I’m grateful my wife knew to stress to me the idea that we must keep on living. Our kid deserves my best effort. I’ll continue to work on it.
Beyond that, I also wanted to honor Dee by helping others who are going through what we did. So I created the
Lu Family Fund last year. My goal was to raise/donate $100,000 by this date. The latest count shows we are at $214,573.47. That’s in large part due to support from the OA collecting community, from our
SECRET STORIES OF COMIC ART podcast, to our
art auctions, to
direct donations. To all who have contributed to our efforts, a heartfelt THANK YOU.
A major initiative of the Lu Family Fund is the Second Opinion Project:
The purpose of the Second Opinion Project is to provide financial assistance to Stage IV CRC patients in seeking second opinions. The idea is simple: If there are 100 Stage IV patients, and 50 get standard of care treatment, while the other 50 get treated by aggressive doctors/surgeons with curative intent, that there will be more survivors and better outcomes with the latter group. I’m certain of this. And the Second Opinion Project will prove it. In the short term, we want to get as many patients into that latter group as possible. Our longer term goal is to improve standard of care for everyone with our results.
Our fundraising continues this month with a special sale from Pixar artist, Andy Beall. Andy is a veteran animator who got his start on the beloved classic, THE IRON GIANT. He was also selected by the Charles Schulz estate to direct the PEANUTS special, HAPPINESS IS A WARM BLANKET, CHARLIE BROWN, as well as write/draw the original comic THE BEAGLE HAS LANDED, CHARLIE BROWN! But the bulk of his career has been at Pixar, where he has worked on countless of your favorite Pixar movies, from THE INCREDIBLES, to the latest releases.
Andy has created a series of drawings featuring all of these iconic characters. Including a gorgeous cover-quality piece for THE IRON GIANT. All of these will be available soon, with 100% of proceeds to benefit cancer patients and their families via the Lu Family Fund. We will kick things off with a special podcast with Andy-- yes, he's also a collector!-- and will follow up with drop details shortly. Keep watching!
Thanks again, everyone, talk soon!
